I was really looking forward to learning how to drive – but at the same time I was a bit nervous. Young people like me are too often involved in serious accidents and I didn’t want to be one of them.
The BRAKE program is not like some lecture or school class. It is run by a team that was friendly and open and made me feel comfortable and able to speak up. Whoever thought of using the gorilla to represent risk taking is to be congratulated! They gave us information and showed us situations. We then had the opportunity to discuss our ideas about it. They explained why things happen and why you need to avoid potential problems rather than lecturing us and trying to scare us. There was problem solving and discussion rather than just “telling” and because of this I was more inclined to listen.
The team had an interesting approach – we learnt lots, were encouraged to think about things and also had fun. As a learner driver I now feel much more prepared for the challenge – and I’m always on the lookout for gorillas on the road! (Jimboomba)
The BRAKE program has been very beneficial for myself as I am about to obtain my learner’s licence.
The BRAKE Program has enabled me to become very aware of the associated risks of driving, even before I am allowed on the road. If I had not attended this program, my awareness of risks and behaviours of others would not have even been thought of.
The mode in which this program was presented surprised me greatly as it was interactive and more like a discussion rather than a teaching session. The coordinators made everyone feel welcome and it was a very positive environment. (Jimboomba)
In 2007 i was apart of the brake program that was held at Robina State High School. This program helps me through everyday driving, i now have my license to tell you the truth i didn't want to be apart of the program until my pop made me but i would do it again as it was helpful and fun. i got your letter the other day and it made me remember how fun the program was so thank you. (Gold Coast)
I did the course lasy year at Tamborine Mountain State High School when I was in year 11 and it was very good! Thanks for showing us this important info! (Scenic Rim)
Im from the Arcadia Valley Injune Qld, and i am attending the Rockhampton C.S.D.E and am doing the BRAKE program.
i am really enjoying this program, it is really helpful, and i really enjoyed the activities that i did with Cathie at the rockhampton Minischool, they were really helpful and gave me a bit more knowledge on what i needed to do every time i intend on going for a drive with someone or on my own.
The program is really helpful and it is giving me the confidence i need and the knowledge that i also need to have as i am thinking of going to get my learners licence as i am already 16, and this program has also boosted my confidence while being in a vehicle and driving...
I would like to thank you for creating this program, i would definitely recommend this program to any other student that asks me about it, because i think it is really worth sitting down to every lesson and picking up a bit more knowledge that you need to have to drive carefully and reduce the total number of crashes that could happen if you were being silly... (Capricornia School of Distance Education participant)
Hi, I feel a lot more safe behind the wheel after the program...thank you so much! it really helped. (Gold Coast )
Hello Steve and Rob, BRAKE i found to be very beneficial, as it has taught me many different situations and hazards that come with growing up and driving within certain communities and areas. overall i believe that this program should be delivered to a wider variety of students to help them understand what driving is really about, (Logan City Council area)
I do remember the brake program. Very well. I was just explaining the 'gorilla concept' to my driving instructor. It was quite a laugh. I much enjoyed the program and was enquiring about any upcoming sessions you may have. (Logan City Council area responding to 18 month post course contact)
Hi there!
thanks for the email. Yes, I am still remembering everything I learnt in BRAKE and I am driving very safe and cautiously. I am still on my L plates, but I can go for my P's in 3 weeks. I have been writing everything down into my logbook and I think I have completed around 52 hours and I need 60. I have also had a driving lesson with an instructor and I will be having a few more before I take my test.
My sister and i have bought a car to share. Its a 1997 model hyundai Excel. Mum and Dad have checked it out and they had a mechanic look at it, and its in perfect working order.
And don't worry, I am definitely looking out for the gorilla! (Gold Coast)
The BRAKE program helps me to stay cautious on the road and remember its not just me on the road.

I think that BRAKE is important because it answers the questions that you don’t find in your drivers ed booklet. (Ipswich City Council area)
Before I learnt the BRAKE stuff I was unaware of the dangers that we face when driving. (Ipswich City Council area)
I liked the BRAKE program and learnt lots of useful information about driving and being a passenger in a car. (Ipswich City Council area)
I enjoyed the mix of practical activities balanced with theory and the use of powerpoints and video. (Ipswich City Council area)
What made BRAKE not boring was the videos and I felt that the whole class got involved. (Ipswich City Council area)
A great eye opener, will definatly change my persona and views on the road. (Central Highlands Regional Council area)
I like the powerpoint and the video/pictures and the way it was explained. (Central Highlands Regional Council area)
Was very good, changed a lot of my driving thoughts (Gold Coast)
Very interesting. I would like to see this course come back for the year 11 next year. I know I will try to be a safer driver because of this course. Thank you, and don't let the gorilla get you. (Isaac Regional Council area).
I will most likely wear a seat belt now. (Isaac Regional Council area).
This course is a lot better than the usual safety courses. Much better fun. (Isaac Regional Council area).
A great program to educate youths on the statistics, consequences and also creates great reminders to us. I didn't realise so many factors are associated with crashes. There is a difference between a CRASH and an ACCIDENT. (Isaac Regional Council area).
Great work guys. Great to see that you are willing to give up your time to teach us 'invincible' teenagers that we are not 'invincible' but dangerous when careless. (Central Highlands Regional Council area)
The course was very interesting and very informational. It was really fun and entertaining. (Isaac Regional Council area).
The gorilla was the best buddy in class. (Isaac Regional Council area).
This course can quite possibly decrease the number of deaths on the road, it was very informative. (Gold Coast)
I learnt a lot from the course I think it should be taught in every school. (Gold Coast)
The gorilla was cool. (Gold Coast)
Driving is going well, I am starting my second year of uni this year so a car and driving have been very useful to get to uni and work! I have remembered all of my skills learnt from BRAKE and I have found them very useful whilst driving. So far I am a year of the way through my green p's without any speeding tickets or fines.
I am still using my first car a 99 Hyundai Excel although are looking at getting another, something like an 09 model Toyota Yaris, as my first car is getting too old. I chose a Yaris for a few reasons; as it is good on petrol, easy to park etc, has a 3 year warranty for any problems it may have, but also because it is alot safer than a brand like Hyundai and it is made more strongly etc.
The website is looking great, well done!
